An occupational surname for a leather tanner or shepherd, with later immigrant variants.

The short story
Barker is an occupational surname with two strong medieval explanations. One describes a leather tanner: Middle English barkere, someone who used tree bark in the tanning process. The other comes through Old French and Latin terms for a shepherd or keeper of sheep, a route that became difficult to distinguish in English records. Berger or Barger may also have been Americanized as Barker in some families. Occupation is therefore the secure catalog type, but confidence is disputed because tanner and shepherd are different trades. Barker, Berker, and Berger should be treated as historical neighbors, not automatic equivalents.
