The short story
Farley is an English habitational surname from any of various places called Farley—in Berkshire, Derbyshire, Hampshire, and other counties—from Old English fearn, “fern,” plus lēah, “woodland clearing.” Related spellings include Farleigh, Fairley, and Fairlie. DAFN also lists an Irish path: a shortened Anglicization of Gaelic Ó Fearghaile (see Farrelly). Place fits the English fern-clearing lead that DAFN puts first, but confidence is disputed because Irish Farrelly lines can appear as Farley in American records without sharing the English place-name origin. Both streams must be checked in family records.
