Lim surname meaning
Most often a Chinese (Teochew/Hokkien/Hakka) or Cambodian form of 林, “woods/forest”; also Korean Im, English Lum, and other Chinese romanizations.
Confidence: Disputed. More than one origin is plausible, or sources disagree. We show the conflict rather than pick a cute answer.
The short story
Lim is several surnames sharing one Roman spelling. In southern Chinese dialects (Teochew, Hokkien, Hakka) and in Cambodian families of Chinese origin, Lim usually writes 林, “woods” or “forest”—the same surname Mandarin writes Lin. Korean Lim is a variant spelling of Im (林 or, less often, 任). English Lim can be a variant of Lum; other Chinese romanizations map Lim to 廉 or 練. Lin, Im, and Liem are closely related forms in U.S. records. Place fits the dominant forest/grove sense of 林, but the many unrelated streams keep confidence disputed.
