Wong surname meaning
Cantonese romanization used for several Chinese surnames, especially 王 (king) and 黃 (yellow).
Confidence: Disputed. More than one origin is plausible, or sources disagree. We show the conflict rather than pick a cute answer.
The short story
Wong is a Cantonese romanization shared by several Chinese surnames, so it has no single universal meaning. It can represent 王, the character associated with “king,” or 黃, “yellow,” among other regional and historical forms. Mandarin Wang and Huang may therefore appear as related spellings, but transliteration and dialect do not by themselves prove one lineage. In an English surname catalog, nickname is the closest broad type for the character-based glosses, not a claim that every Wong was called a king or identified by color. Confidence is disputed because the spelling combines multiple Chinese characters and family histories.
