The short story
Cheng is a Romanization for more than one Chinese surname. Dictionary treatments highlight Mandarin and Cantonese 程, “measurement,” from ancient states or fiefs in Henan and Shaanxi, and Mandarin 成, “accomplish” or “become,” from Zhou-period fiefs whose names were later simplified. In Cantonese and Wade–Giles, Cheng also commonly writes 鄭 (Mandarin Zheng), and other dialect spellings map further characters onto Cheng. Place fits the state-and-fief origins of the main forms, but the several unrelated characters behind one English spelling keep confidence disputed.
