Walls surname meaning
An English and Scottish variant of Wall (dweller by a wall or spring), with post-medieval -s; in Ireland also sometimes a variant of Walsh.
Confidence: Disputed. More than one origin is plausible, or sources disagree. We show the conflict rather than pick a cute answer.
The short story
Walls is usually the English and Scottish Wall with a later plural or excrescent -s. Wall itself is topographic: someone who lived by a stone wall or town rampart (Old English weall), or, in the West Midlands, by a spring or stream (Mercian wæll). Places named Wall and Norman Irish de Valle also feed the name. In County Derry and elsewhere, Walls can instead be a variant of Walsh. Place fits the dominant wall/spring topographic reading, but the Walsh stream and multiple Wall etymologies keep confidence disputed.
