Jenkins surname meaning
A patronymic surname from Jenkin, the diminutive “little John” or “son of John.”
The short story
Jenkins grew from Jenkin, a diminutive form of John. The older -kin ending carried a “little” sense, so Jenkin could mean Little John and, in surname use, identify a child or descendant of John. The name became especially established in Cornwall, Devon, and southern Wales, where local spellings and Welsh forms met English records. Jenkin, Jenkyn, and Jankin are close historical forms; Siencyn is a Welsh counterpart. Jenkins should not be casually expanded to Jenkinson, whose structure means “son of little John” and represents a further patronymic step.
