Confidence: Disputed. More than one origin is plausible, or sources disagree. We show the conflict rather than pick a cute answer.
The short story
Sexton is most often an English occupational surname from Middle English sextein, “sexton,” via Old French secrestein and medieval Latin sacristanus—the church officer who kept sacred vessels and vestments and later tended the churchyard and dug graves. In northern England some Sextons are variants of Saxton; a Devon place Sexton is a rare habitational source. In Ireland Sexton can Anglicize Gaelic Ó Seastnáin, “descendant of Seastnán” (linked to “bodyguard” or defender). Sexson is a variant. Occupation fits the English church-office lead, but the Irish and Saxton streams keep confidence disputed.
